As described in The Washington Post, June 17, 1928: A novel dealing with Japanese life…will be brought out soon by William Edwin Rudge, publisher of New York. With the consent and kind approval of the Japanese Ambassador, T. Matsudaira, the book will be inscribed to his daughter, Miss Setsu Matsudaira, whose marriage to Price Chichibu is expected to take place in October. The Way of Ume has an enthusiastic introduction written by the late William Elliot Griffis only a few weeks before his death. In concluding the introduction, after reference to the approaching imperial coronation, Dr. Grifis said, “The publication of this engaging volume will be as the worthy extending, from our side and the grateful acceptance by the Japanese, of hands across the sea.”
