First Edition, Second Issue. 8vo., color painting illustrated frontispiece (paper) inset on front cover, 14 full-page illustrations, color frontispiece plus 13 plates. Original red cloth, lettered in yellow on the spine and front cover. Rear hinge cracked, lettering on the spine somewhat chipped, affecting a few letters in the title and the publisher’s name, otherwise a fine copy, with a presentation inscription from the author on the front free endpaper, dated February 24, 1906. Quarter red morocco slipcase.

This copy corresponds to descriptions of the first issue, except that there is no number at the bottom of page [9]. In the first state of sheets, page 9 (half-title for the first story) is so numbered at the bottom of the page. This numeral, rarely perfect, broke and disappeared by stages until no trace was left.

The last of the six books both written and illustrated by Remington, it is generally accepted as his best. First published in Cosmopolitan in 1905-1906, it contains a number of his most powerful and poignant Native American paintings.

Frederic Sackrider Remington (October 4, 1861 – December 26, 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer. He specialized in Western Americana, showing cowboys, Native Americans, and the Cavalry in the West in the late 1800s.
