Description

The Waste Land. By T. S. Eliot. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1923, Second Impression.

Thirty-four copies of the second edition or, more properly, the second impression. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies. Small octavo: 1 blank leaf, 3 leaves, 9-64 pp. The signatures are uncut. In the publisher’s stiff black cloth-covered boards, with gilt-stamped titles. The original salmon dust jacket with black lettering are preserved without trimming or clipping. Uncommonly fine, essentially as new, with some minor edgewear and toning to a few volumes.

The pagination, sizing, and binding are identical to the second state of the first impression. Although it is called a “Second Edition” on the copyright page, this is actually a second impression from the same setting of type as the first edition. The reading “mount in” in line 339 (page 41) was not corrected. (Gallup, A6b)

Provenance: Scofield Thayer, editor and co-owner of The Dial, then by descent. Statement of provenance included.
