Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) was an American poet, short-story writer, and painter. She served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, and she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1956, among other literary honors and awards. Although she was independently wealthy and enjoyed a life of privilege, a substantial portion of her poetry celebrated working-class settings, including factories, farms, and fishing villages.
