The fourth and final novel by Fitzgerald, it is a semi-autobiographical work, telling the story of Dick Diver, a psychiatrist who marries one of his patients. Diver is claimed to be based on Fitzgerald’s friend, Gerald Murphy, but resembles much of Fitzgerald, too.
