Sulpicius Severus (born c. 363, Aquitania, Gaul—died c. 420), early Christian ascetic, a chief authority for contemporary Gallo-Roman history. He was considered the most graceful writer of his time. Severus’ 4th-century chronicles were some of the most important pre-Middle Ages works of sacred history. He discussed the world events from Creation through the start of the 5th-century. He focused on what the ideal church should look like, as well as setting precedents for rulers, and how their crimes should be handled. Other works known of Severus include his biographical account of the life of Saint Martin, along with letters, correspondence and dialogues.
