Description

Our Artist in Cuba; Fifty Drawings on Wood. Leaves from the Sketch-Book of a Traveler, during the Winter of 1864-5. First edition with erroneous roman numeral at title page reading MDCLXV. By Geo. W. Carleton [George Washington Carleton]. Original dark pink cloth, beveled edges, gilt stamp title at front board, spine faded with gilt lettering. Rubbing. 4.5 x 6.5 in. As described by the American Antiquarian Society, the artist (and author) self-deprecatingly describes this “brochure” as “a mere pocket-book collection of way-side pen-and-ink sketches, the chance results of idle moments”; in reality, the fifty-some drawings in this volume are caricatured but energetic depictions of what an American visitor to Cuba envisioned the reality of daily life to be on that island.
