Malleus Maleficarum [The Hammer of Witchcraft, or sometimes translated as The Hammer of Witches], by Jacobus Sprenger and Heinrich Kramer, translated by Montague Summers and edited with an introduction by Pennethorne Hughes. Includes numerous woodcut illustrations first published in 1626 in Milan in the Compendium Maleficarum compiled by Father Franciscus [Francisco] Maria Guaccius. Binding design by Fiona Campbell. Printed by Richard Clay (The Chaucer Press), Ltd, Bungay. Bound by W & J Mackay & Co Ltd, Chatham. Published by The Folio Society, London, in 1968.

Housed in original publisher’s marbled slipcase. Black cloth covered boards, metallic red and silver flame decoration, silver stamp lettering at spine, some spotting near outer hinge. Very good+.

The work is a detailed legal and theological document that has been regarded as the standard handbook on witchcraft, including its detection and its extirpation, until well into the 1700s. It went through 28 editions between 1486 and 1600 and was accepted by Roman Catholics and Protestants alike as an authoritative source of information concerning Satanism and as a guide to Christian defense.
